What makes PAL different?
Below are a few reasons why pregnancy after loss is a very different experience to before loss.
- Specific concerns – some parents may have particular health challenges or genetic conditions which contributed to the death of their baby or child which they worry about in this pregnancy;
- Unknowns – often when a baby dies before birth, the cause of death is unknown and they had a seemingly low-risk and healthy pregnancy. This can be worrying because there are no warning signs to be mindful of and it contributes to feeling out of control;
- Limitations of medicine – bereaved parents are often acutely aware of the limitations of medicine, the reality is there is still so much that we don’t know – medical science isn’t perfect and we can only go on what scans and monitoring tell us;
- Greater awareness – parents will have a greater awareness of things that can go wrong in pregnancy, at birth and beyond based on their own experiences and the experiences of others they have connected with. For some their only experiences of pregnancy may have resulted in loss. Put simply, I personally know far more bereaved mums than mums who have not experienced baby or child loss.
